MATH 215: Mathematics in Spanish Art & Architecture (3 credits)
Students will study the rich overlap between mathematics and art in the context of Spain. The connections between these two (seemingly) different subjects are magnificently illustrated by buildings like the Alhambra in Granada - a building which is both physically and mathematically beautiful. Students will learn about the mathematical and artistic techniques used to create tilings like those in the Alhambra and other sites across Spain. We will also explore the rich mathematical ideas used in classical and modern art to create works which are beautiful, realistic, and compelling. Spain's artistic treasures, housed in museums like the Prado and the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, will be a rich source of mathematical and aesthetic ideas. Fulfills SEE Quantitative Literacy (QL) or SEE Fine Arts (FA) requirement. Course Prerequisites: Placement into MATH 135 or above
Other Eligibility Requirements: Students must be in good academic, disciplinary, and financial standing with the University.
